The 2008 Festival
The weekend Festival, sponsored by the Banbury Guardian, is gathering a mounting local and national reputation. It broke past records with this, its fifth, event in March 2008. The Millenium Hall in this Northants 'Village of the Year' was abuzz with browsers at bookstalls, local authors to meet, a workshop for young writers, chat about reading, writing and books over lunch, tea cups and wine glasses. Speakers always enjoy their visit and book signings at this unstuffy festival and their sessions were a sell-out this year.
Sir John Mortimer and Steven Berkhoff brought typically robust and witty perspectives to contemporary theatre, writing and politics. Radio 4 veteran and life peer, Bishop Richard Harries interwove religious insight with literary stimulus. Africa held the spotlight with Lawrence Potter, hotfoot from teaching in Rwanda , and Tim Butcher of the 'Telegraph', recounting his adventures up the Congo - Blood River - in the steps of Stanley. History had its say with period crime writers Mark Billingham and Ann Perry', and under Penguin sponsorship, Catherine Bailey's account of Yorkshire coalmining, and Clare Clark's of the building of London sewers,
